The Tentacles of Evolution

By Bruce Wood, MA
Edited by Anita Millen, MD, MPH, MA

After sixteen years conducting tours in a creation museum, nine years on the prestigious ICR staff, and answering thousands of theological and scientific questions I have learned that people can be very stubborn about the topic of origins.

Stubbornness can be a good attribute. Those prepared to defend their faith and deflect the onslaught of evolutionary thinking, aka Darwinism, have strengthened their faith and the faith of many congregations and students.

On the other hand, stubbornness can be a bad attribute when used to remain obstinate and refuse to consider alternate viewpoints. Darwinism has a hold on millions. Its adherents are too content, self-centered, and proud to admit mistakes, and too afraid to approach the truth.

In sixteen years, having given over 3,000 tours in the ICR creation museum, I presented scientific and theological facts in the (minimum) hour and a half circuit through its ten rooms. I can say confidently that I brought every visitor face to face with the corrupt theory of evolution and how it has permeated the minds of Christian and secular thinkers.

Reflecting on the predatory nature of evolution reminds me of an octopus. This cephalopod is known to be highly intelligent, with powerful arms for offense and defense. Like the octopus, Darwinism uses camouflage—to blend in with its surroundings.

Like an octopus in the ocean of humanity, Darwinism is a formidable hunter preying on billions of lost souls and millions of Christians. Those seeking to corrupt minds, use half-truths, meaningless techno-jargon, and masks of religious deception to ‘deceive even the elect. Peter warned Christians regarding this menace: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8; NKJV) [1]

Why do so many Christians join non-Christians in believing evolution when they are confronted with Biblical and scientific reality that discredits Darwin’s theory? Over the years, I have compiled what I believe are the major reasons Christians, non-Christians, agnostics, and atheists embrace this usurper of the Genesis account. In no special order, they are:

  1. SIN—also referred to as “old self”, works tirelessly to corrupt the knowledge of God. Genesis 3 records that Adam initiated sin when he rebelled against his Creator in the Garden of Eden. The Apostle Paul refers to this in Romans: “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12).

Many other verses affirm this truth, including Psalm 51:5; Jeremiah 17:9; Isaiah 64:6; Romans 8:6-8; Galatians 5:19-21; and Ephesians 4:22.

NOTE: Adam’s sin was the beginning of death, which affected the entire universe. The existence of supernovas is one argument secular thinkers use to prove evolution is true. (Supernovas were not created by God and pronounced to be “good,” as God declared after each day of creation). Millions of species dying over millions of years, as evolutionists interpret the geologic strata, wouldn’t be considered “good” by God. The evolutionary process, involving disease, misery, and death, contradicts God’s declaration that His creation was ‘good,” and culminated with the creation of Adam and Eve, which He called “very good.”

Sin works in tandem with the old self to strengthen a blatant biblical truth: People do not want to know the Creator. Although evolution is not the cause of sin, it is a major conduit through which God’s existence is openly challenged. Darwin’s theory has replaced confidence in biblical truth. He may have been a decent naturalist, but Darwin’s theory[2] is contrary to the directed creation of an omniscient and omnipotent God.

Evolutionist, Douglas Futuyma clearly stated, “By coupling undirected, purposeless variation to the blind, uncaring process of natural selection, Darwin made theological or spiritual explanations of the life processes superfluous.” [3]

Every human in history has been plagued by the deceptive character of our sin nature. One major feature of this affliction is rebellion against authority—especially God’s. The Apostle Paul wrote, “the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish” (Galatians 5:17).

Even true Christians retain the capacity to sin until they enter Heaven; that is why scripture, resulting in an unproductive life for Christ, “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be” (Romans 8:7).

Evolution’s influence on theology has influenced millions to believe that God used this cruel, callous, chaotic process. Even staunch evolutionist, David Hull, realized how preposterous it was for a Creator to use any form of evolution:

“Whatever the God implied by evolutionary theory and the data of natural history may be like, he is not the Protestant God of waste not, want not. He is also not a loving God who cares about his productions. He is not even the awful God portrayed in the book of Job. The God of the Galápagos is careless, wasteful, indifferent, almost diabolical. He is certainly not the sort of God to whom anyone would be inclined to pray.” [4]

  1. IGNORANCE is the typical result of not knowing (or wanting to know) one or more of the attributes of the biblical God. These include Self-existence, Transcendence, Immanence, Immutability, Eternality, Omnipresence, Omnipotence, Omniscience, Incorporeality, Unity, Creativity, Personality, Incomprehensibility, and Moral Perfection.

However, evolution contradicts two of these attributes. As Creator, God would not be all-knowing, since evolution is a chaotic process, and He would not be morally perfect, since He lied saying that sin began with Adam, death was “good,” and death was NOT the penalty for sin, to name a few examples.

When Christians accept evolution as a viable theory for origins, they deny the truth of scripture. If the Bible cannot be believed about Genesis, why should it be trusted about anything else?

Many Christians are ignorant regarding the Creator’s timetable and method used in His creative acts. Scripture and science demand that each creation day in Genesis—particularly in the context of Exodus 20:11—be a literal 24-hour day. (cf. Austel response in reason 3 below). God declares that His was a fiat creation, spoken into existence without the use of any form of evolution. Integrating evolution into theology has resulted in unscriptural cosmogonies, such as day-age, theistic, progressive, big bang, Gap, etc.

  1. UNINFORMED THEOLOGY PROFESSORS have been a major source of spiritual downfall for millions of Christians. Even some professors in leading Christian institutions, have used erroneous methods of interpretation (hermeneutics), teaching students that God used a form of evolution in His process in creating the universe and everything in it.

Tragically, many of their students become future pastors and theology teachers, who, in turn, will mingle evolution with the Genesis account. The result is predictable: heretical messages that weaken the faith of their listeners. They would do well to heed the warning of James 3:1, “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.” (NKJV)

In 2004, while on the ICR staff, I emailed Dr. Herman Austel, one of my seminary professors regarding the denial of a literal Genesis by Hebrew scholars. I emailed Dr. Austel in 2004, asking him for his interpretation on the word, “day,” in the context of the Genesis creation. Specifically, I asked him how ‘day’ is used in Exodus 20:11. He kindly responded as follows:

“I agree with you that Exodus 20:11 is an important proof of the fact that the days of creation in Gen 1 are to be understood as 24-hour days. I have spent some time as it was available to me to jot down some observations of my own, but, perhaps more importantly, to research some authors who are not proponents of a recent creation, but who state candidly that the creation account in Gen 1 clearly speaks of 24-hour days. These authors are a fair representation of people who make similar statements.”

The value of these statements lies in the fact that the authors did not themselves believe that the world was created in one seven-day week, but understood that the Biblical text intended that understanding. They did not attempt to force the Biblical text into a mold conforming to currently prevailing scientific opinion. They simply saw a disconnect between the Bible and “science.” They justified this by interpreting the 7 days of Genesis as a literary device, a parable, or simply an antiquated view of creation. [5]

Unfortunately, well-meaning Christians often attempt to make the Genesis account say something other than its clearly intended meaning to accommodate the Bible to modern science.

Help! My daughter became an atheist

By Jon Covey, BA, CLS(ASCP) Ret.
Edited by Anita Millen, MD, MPH, MA (Ret.)

Both Bill Morgan and Frank Turek have heard the plea of parents whose daughters or sons were strong believers, led Bible studies, attended Christian colleges for biblical studies, etc. who after one lesson in biology lost their faith in Christ and became atheists and mocked the Bible. Morgan described a daughter whose biology professor taught her class that we descended from apelike ancestors and she became an atheist.

What’s wrong with this picture? Obviously, her parents and youth pastor didn’t think it was necessary to give her basic knowledge about the flaws of evolutionary thinking and their devious misinformation, such as the false claim of 99% similarity of DNA between man and chimp. If you have children or grandchildren, this short warning should motivate you to give them the information they need to know about creation and evolution to prevent this kind of conversion.
